For a quick getaway to the south of Banderas Bay, away from the somewhat urban modern day Puerta Vallarta, a trip to any of the beaches south of Boca de Tomatlán is well worth it.

The secluded Playas las Animas, Mimixto, Las Caletas, Mahajuitas & Yelapa can all be reached via water taxi from either Los Muertos Pier in Old Vallarta or Boca de Tomatlán which is about 20 minutes south of Vallarta. You can even take a local bus for about 45 cents from downtown Puerto Vallarta to Boca de Tomatlán, a little authentic fishing village, to hire a water taxi and have a scenic drive along the way. Any of these options can be done in a day trip.
