Welcome to Bahía Tranquila, a website about maintaining an ecologically healthy environment while appreciating the best that the Puerto Vallarta region has to offer. The Spanish word bahía means bay in English, as does tranquila mean calm or peaceful; so bahía tranquila translates best to calm bay. Around this meaning I've built the concept of keeping in peace with the natural surroundings and environment, even in an urban bay area, while maintaining a lively culture, history, and an economy based largely on tourism. For more information on the background of this website please see the About page.

As you browse the site and blog posts I invite you to contribute your own thoughts by posting comments, clicking the Like button for our Facebook page, joining in the Twitter conversation if you wish, or sharing your photos here via the Facebook page or Flickr.

As the year wraps up a warm Christmas during this next two weeks in Puerto Vallarta, or just Vallarta, we are looking forward to ringing in the New Year with an extra special extravaganza taking place in the heart of the historic center.

The New Year's Eve event, entitled Fusión de Sentidos: Fiesta Vallarta 2011, will be a cultural and arts festival. There will be something for everyone to enjoy at this festival which will include DJ's, live music, dancing, and more. Families, children, and adults residing in Vallarta and those who will be here from afar will together enjoy this evening of  local and regional entertainment, and dancing late into the night, ending with a spectacular fireworks display at 2:00 a.m.

The event, emphasizing equality and diversity as it's theme, also serves to commemorate the city's new website and marketing strategy in promoting Puerto Vallarta as an international, world class, destination—the city is anticipating 10,000 locals and visitors to join the celebration.

Save the date for an evening full of good times for everyone and we hope all will join us on December 31st at 7:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. in the morning. This event location, at Los Arcos amphitheater on the Malecón across from City Hall and the zócalo centro, is a symbol  of the city's heritage.

Owners of the Zoologico de Vallarta, Alfredo, Antonio, and Martin Castañeda, made a December 4, 2010 announcement of birth of two newborn Bengal tiger cubs. Zoologico de Vallarta has been very successful  with it's reproduction in captivity program with 28-35 large felines born each year

The female cub is white and the gold colored male cub has already been named 'Cheque', after the Mexican singer Ezequiel 'Cheque' Peña who will be helping to provide monetary support as its sponsor.

Bengal tigers are endangered species, originating from India, and they are the largest of the feline species. The Castañedas are extremely committed to the preservation of all endangered cat species and believe that providing an appropriate ecological environment and proper care fosters encouragement in the reproduction process in captivity. They will be donating four of the Bengal tigers born at the zoo each year to India, to be freed to roam on a protected reserve.

Puerto Vallarta's zoo is located about 10 miles south of town in the Mismaloya jungle, on the South Coast, and is open 7 days a week from 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. More information is available on their website: zoologicodevallarta.com
